Norwegian Wood… and Wind and Waves

For people who really want to strum in the sun: Acoustic Guitar magazine has announced an Inaugural "Acoustic Guitar Cruise," to take place in the Western Caribbean from Nov. 1 - 8, 2003. That same week, the Eastern Caribbean will be swaying with a Jazz Cruise.

Acoustic Guitar magazine is enticing guitar lovers to join them for a vacation on Norwegian Cruise Line's "Norwegian Wind. Guests will be able to take guitar clinics and group lessons with acoustic guitar masters, while they're cruising between such stops as Grand Cayman, Roatan, Belize and Cozumel.

Scheduled to participate are:

  • guitar legend Happy Traum
  • fingerstyle artist Peppino D'Agostino
  • AG editor and renowned flatpicker Scott Nygaard
  • guitar maker Bob Taylor, President of Taylor Guitars
  • Austin musician David Hamburger
  • music writer David Lusterman

Meanwhile, sailing throughout the Eastern Caribbean (Nassau, Tortola and Antigua) will be the Holland America line’s Zaandam, heavily loaded with jazz players and fans.

The entire ship will be dedicated to jazz, boasting over 200 hours of great jazz shows and 70 performers. At peak times there will be six jazz venues going simultaneously. ("On days at sea, the music starts at 11:00am and goes to 1:00am the next morning, and that does not include those late night/early morning jam sessions, which have been known to go until 5:00 am." Oh, right -- jazz musicians staying up late.)

Scheduled performers include:

  • Kenny Barron Trio
  • Freddy Cole Quartet
  • Jeff Hamilton Trio
  • Houston Person Quartet
  • Eddie Higgins
  • and many more

The Jazz Cruise offers passengers an opportunity to meet and mingle with a variety of professional artists. In addition to the numerous performance, the cruise offers "Meet the Artist" panel sessions and CD signing opportunities, as well as many informal and casual situations where passengers can "hang with the players."
