A Shot in the Dark
Where did it come from? A high-tech company is preparing to offer US cities a system that uses an array of sensors to listen for the distinct acoustic signature of gunshots, and then triangulate on their location.

According to the journal Technology Review, Proxity Digital Networks is testing battery-powered detectors that security forces can simply clamp to trees and light poles. Using wireless communication, the detectors can transmit gunfire information to towers located up to 3 miles away, so that information from multiple sensors can be combined to determine the location of the shot.

The company claims the sensors can even identify the precise type of firearm used to make the shot, helping police forces "dispatch a more effective response team specific to the situation."
