Singles and Jingles

A new crop of songwriters has been honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which showcases the composers and lyricists who create the stuff of popular music. Meanwhile, the country's oldest creator of radio jingles has a special pitch for you - your own personal jingle!

New York was the site of the 35th induction ceremony for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. SHOF Chairman and famed songwriter Hal David introduced the June 10 event by remarking, "The Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards is very special because it’s a time when premier songwriters come together to honor their own."

Recognized by their peers this year were:

  • Charles Fox (including hits “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and “I Got A Name"; TV themes for “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley,” “Angie,” “The Love Boat,” “Wonder Woman,” “Love American Style” and “Paper Chase"; music for films “The other Side of the Mountain,” “Foul Play,” “Goodbye Columbus,” “Barbarella” and others)
  • Al Green ("Tired of Being Alone," "Let's Stay Together," "I Can't Get Next to You," "I'm Still in Love With You," "Call Me," "Here I Am," "Let's Get Married" and "Love and Happiness")
  • Darryl Hall & John Oates (“Man Eater,” “Out of Touch,” “Private Eyes,” “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone” and “Kiss On My List")
  • Don McLean (“American Pie,” “Vincent,” “Chain Lightning." Ironically, McLean was the subject of "Killing me Softly With His Song," made a hit by Roberta Flack)
  • Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield (Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Too Busy Thinking About My Baby,” the Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” and “Ball of Confusion,” Edwin Starr’s “War” and “Take Me In Your Arms and Love Me” for Gladys Knight & the Pips)

Special awards went to Stevie Wonder, Rob Thomas, and Neil Sedaka (Lifetime Achievement), with the Towering Song award given to "What the World Needs Now Is Love."

Dallas-based PAMS Productions is the country's largest producer of radio jingles. (Their site blares, in a familiar, retro sing-song style, "P - A - M - S, PAMS of Dallas!")  Founded in 1951, they were the first production company to specialize in what the trade calls "station identification jingle packages."

Newsweek recently reported that PAMS is now offering their services to individuals looking for that perfect, customized answering machine greeting or web site welcome. Twenty-second cuts start at $225, with quantity discounts available.

Visit PAMS Productions' site, which includes an online sampler of classic station IDs from the 50s, 60s and 70s,  as well as information about their "Personal Cuts" (including a sampler of personal work).

PAMS' competitor Jingles.com (founded in 1974, also in Dallas!) is offering a similar personal service  the "JAM Personal Cuts" service
