Our Vision

For now, the Museum of Music exists as a virtual museum here on these web pages.

It's an online celebration of everything musical... with news, events, learning, links and musical curiosities. Check back often - it changes constantly.

But the Museum of Music will become a real-world, bricks & mortar museum in the heart of Atlanta.

As you explore our web site, you'll see what our new Museum will be like, and you'll track our progress as we build it.  Heck, you'll even help build it:

Visualize the spaces and activities we plan by visiting our Pavilion Previews.

Explore the vast world of musical activity by reading the latest edition of Vibrations.

Help make this vision a reality through our Can't Keep Quiet! campaign.

It's a museum, right?

You know the rules: Be quiet. Look but don't touch. Show some respect. Sit still.

Wrong. The Museum of Music is a new kind of museum. A high tech - yet very human and personal - world of music where you're free to explore and interact with sound in all kinds of unexpected ways.

To do that, you will have to break a few rules.

You can start by breaking these:

"Look, but don't touch."

Not in this museum. Once we've finished building our facilities, you'll be able to come here and try an instrument. Or make your own. Record a CD. Conduct a virtual orchestra. Mosh. Meet a songwriter. Take a class. Sing on stage. Test the acoustics.

You can get an autograph. Go on air. Experiment with sound. Connect to a live concert on the other side of the world. Finger-paint a symphony. Remix your favorite album or rewrite your favorite concerto. Rock the house with your air guitar. Dance. Learn. And live the music.

"Be quiet; this is a museum."

On the contrary... talk. Make music. Ask questions. Chat with fascinating craftspeople, artists, sound engineers, and performers. Get to know music lovers from around the world. If it gets quiet around here, it's only because a beautiful new sound just took your breath away.

"You wouldn't understand."

No, you aren't too young to appreciate it. Or too old to get it. You don't have to be a musician to understand it. This museum is designed for all ages, all interests. We even have new-tech ways of personalizing your visit so that it fits your musical tastes and knowledge level.

"You already know what you like."

Sure, you'll find your favorite type of music (and artist/writer/group) here. But you'll also find sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. And you will love them. We feature music from different places, times, peoples. (Sometimes we even surprise ourselves with the music we uncover.)

"The best museums are in the old cities."

For a new kind of museum, we picked a fresh new city. One of the fastest growing, fastest changing cities in the world. A diverse city that is not defined by a single style of music, yet has been a crossroads for them all. A global hub with the busiest airport on the planet, an international reputation for hospitality, and a dynamic arts community. Atlanta.

"If it's good for you, it either tastes bad or is boring."

This museum is good for you. It tastes great. And it isn't boring. But hey, you already knew that.

"The museums of our youth evoke memories of stately, static places, old buildings housing even older objects. We peered through glass at solitary and disembodied artifacts, strolling quietly and politely, thinking a bit about what we observed... "
