Skilled craftspeople transform these elements into the instruments of sound using centuries-old tools and techniques… as well as 21st century technologies. And they're doing it right here in our Music Workshop.

How are the tools of music born and cared for?

See for yourself. Our artisans-in-residence are designing, building, repairing, and maintaining instruments on our premises. They operate their actual, working shops "in the round," so you can watch everything as it happens.

Get even closer.

Throughout the day, our artisans guide visitors through their studios for a closer look at their work. Ask them:

·

What unique tools do you use to make instruments?

·

How do you develop an eye for fine materials?

·

How do master artisans learn their craft?

·

What do you listen for in an instrument?

·

What do you listen for in an instrument?

·

How do you tailor instruments for individual musicians?

·

Which techniques have been used for generations?

·

How are new technologies and materials developed?
